In Search
Shadow is the absence of light. Everything in existence casts a shadow. Depending on the light shed upon a form, the shadow’s form changes as well. Everyone has an “internal shadow” residing in our psyche, that area often hidden from our conscious selves. Our shadows are shaped by our experiences of the past, follow us through life, guiding and influencing our decisions, often impacting the present in unforeseen ways.
Printed in cyanotype, In Search explores the notion of our internal shadow through a series of self-portraits. The shadow figure seen holding her own camera identifies the photograph as a self-portrait. The color blue symbolizes a departure from reality away from typically black shadows, and connotes isolation through disassociation from our sense of self and our internal shadow.
The figure’s journey through In Search takes her to several crossroads, stairs, and pathways which represent her decisions. With each decision, situations change, and so does the form of the shadow, making it difficult to recognize our internal shadow or its influence. How much do we recognize our internal shadow and how much do we allow it to impact our present, and ultimately our future?
